  • Deck
    Design, engineer + build
The existing deck was a simple rectangular shape, and after 40 years, was falling apart. If I was going to have to rebuild it anyhow, I thought I'd try a different form.

  • Deck
    Design, engineer + build
As with every project, this one began with loads of sketches. Once I had the basic form, I then created the engineering drawings to follow. Relatively speaking, deconstructing the old deck was easy, though very messy, destroying about half of the landscaping . Raising the new deck took a bit more effort and accuracy, and amazingly enough, the final form went almost exactly according to the plans. After building some custom seating, and adding lighting, the deck was ready for a proper bbq party.

  • Fire Pit
    Design + build
I've always wanted an outdoor fire pit, and knew that it had to fit the geometry of the seating area surrounding it. I wanted something more sculptural, but couldn't find an existing product that fit. So I made my own out of bent aluminum sheet metal, powder coating the exterior. A hidden propane line under the area floor provides the gas for the heat.

    Design + build
To figure out the form, I began by folding paper to come up with interesting shapes. This was translated into 2D, and then into scale models. Working the sheet aluminum using manual equipment was a challenge.

  • Outdoor Gathering Area
    Design, engineer + build
We have a yard that we rarely used, so I decided to create an elevated area where we could hang out. To one side is seating for 12-16 people, and on the other is a counter area and spot for a smoker or pizza oven. Underneath the seating is subtle lighting, and between the fire pit and heated seat cushions (not shown), we're able to spend cooler evenings outside.

  • Outdoor Gathering Area
    Design, engineer + build
After a intensive process of form/function exploration, I chose a balance that suited the available space, and began construction of the seating area. But unlike the deck, this was more than just a engineered wood platform, incorporating tile and stone work, as well as researching and applying the ergonomics of a proper bench seat profile.

  • Side Table
    Design + build
I wanted to continue exploring folded paper geometry, and how that could translate to a bent metal table. I considered and modeled a number of forms in paper, finally deciding to go with the simplest for the first project. After bending and riveting the panels, the table was powder-coated, and Heath tiles were added for the top.
