Bikezilla
The design
Burning Man is an event that occurs on a vast, flat playa. Getting around by some sort of vehicle is crucial. I wanted to create a relaxing ride with absurdly comfy seats, a mutant design, and a fantastic beast pulling us along. At first, this was to be a two-person recumbent side-by-side affair, which then morphed into including a third passenger, then more riders, more passengers, more height, wheelie wheels...ambitions began to run wild.
Having never seen a machine quite like this, a lot of pre-planning, and quite a bit of trial and error in the assembly was involved. I used mostly throw-away bikes, stripped them down to their essence, then began fitting them together like a 3D puzzle. Using lots of pipe, nuts and bolts, cables and connectors, and a bit of fur, it slowly came together. It was then completely disassembled, hauled to the camp, then reassembled for its inaugural run. After some tweaks and a couple broken pieces, it eventually got into fine working order.

We ride!
There's no better way to cruise the endless playa of Burning Man than on a custom ride; 8 feet off the ground, seated in comfy beach chairs, a giant pig leading the way...and for those up front, an unobstructed view of the circus.

Chess Set
Design + fabricate
I've always been a big fan of the form and figures of a chess set, and I wanted to create a modern, portable flat-pack version for traveling. The entire set is magnetically held together, with acrylic as the main material. The playing board is comprised of four panels, each of which has the chess and checkers pieces nested into the back side. The top and bottom cap pieces, when placed side by side, serve as a magnetic base that the board mounts to, bringing the full size to about a foot square. Each piece has a magnet on it's base that corresponds to a smaller magnet at the center of each board square.

Puzzles
Design, illustrate + fabricate
When my sons were young, I decided that I wanted to create a different type of puzzle – one more focused on visual association, and utilizing four basic geometric shapes. In collaboration with the illustrator Carrie English (who also had two young daughters), these puzzles were silk screened on wood, then cut into their component pieces. Magnetic backing was applied to gently hold them to a metal surface for easier manipulation. A couple dozen sets were initially produced, and handed off to friends and schools. Originally meant for production, life with young kids intervened, and that plan was put on pause; perhaps to be picked up again in the future.
